The overall goal of the clinical sciences division is to undertake clinical research and provide quality care to HIV infected population for enhancing their survival. The division works through Facility for Collaborative Clinical Research (FCCR) units across the city. The scientists are involved in various observational studies, clinical trials, outbreak investigations, community-based research and systematic reviews pertaining to HIV/AIDS. The division is in forefront of translating evidence-based interventions into practice in order to reduce the treatment gap for HIV. It supports other institutional divisions in their research activities. The division has a well established central pharmacy that actively supports the clinical trials of national importance, demonstration projects and observational studies. The central pharmacy plays a significant role at national level and extends support for investigational drug management during outbreaks. The division also works closely with the National AIDS Control Programme and the activities are directed towards strengthening of the programme. It runs an ART centre since last 14 years catering to over 4000 people living with HIV.
The staff is also involved in information technology (IT) support, Swachha Bharat campaign, responses under Right to information act (RTI) and Institutional Ethics Committee related activities.
National AIDS Control Organization had approved an ART Centre for research study participants at NARI in 2005. The institute has been recognized to provide free antiretroviral drugs under Full NACO ART roll out programme for HIV infected patients in Pune Corporation area since May 2010. This new centre has been initiated at the centrally located NARI-PMC ‘Clinical Care and Research Centre’ which is a centre developed in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation. The staff have been appointed and trained by NACO.
NARI - FCCR cater to people who walk-in for HIV testing and to those who come for re-confirmation of their HIV test results done at private facilities. Pre-test and post-test counselling for HIV, clinical examination and laboratory investigations are the services provided to the clinic attendees. Appropriate linkages to the anti-retroviral treatment centre for further prevention and care management is also done. This facility also conducts various clinical research.
This clinic has been established in Dr. Kotnis Dispensary to cater mainly the high risk population such as STD patients and female sex workers. Dr. Kotnis Dispensary (Gadikhana) is located near red light area of Pune. The clinic is having the facilities for pre and post test counseling, clinical examination, pharmacy and laboratory to perform STD tests
