The CoHRPICA (Cohorts for HIV Resistance and Progression in Indian Children and Adults) study is a national HIV cohort initiative jointly funded by DBT, ICMR, and IAVI, with support from NACO, aimed at strengthening HIV research infrastructure and creating valuable resources for future scientific investigations in India.
The study established cohorts of HIV-uninfected high-risk individuals (including MSM/TG, FSW, PWID), HIV-infected adults (with and without comorbidities), HIV-infected children, and Early HIV-Infected adults. Through longitudinal follow-ups, the biorepository has nearly 43000 clinically annotated biospecimens like serum, plasma, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), linked with comprehensive socio-demographic, clinical, and laboratory data.
A state-of-the-art Central Biorepository at ICMR-NITVAR, Pune, and a backup Regional Biorepository at ICMR-NIRT were established to ensure long-term preservation and dissemination of these samples. By creating high-quality cohorts, biospecimen repositories, and a national HIV database, CoHRPICA has provided a sustainable platform for future research on HIV immunology, disease progression, prevention, treatment, and cure strategies, thereby significantly advancing HIV research capacity in India.
